A walk of approximately eight miles takes in some of The Lake Districts most beautiful scenery, made especially resplendent on an atmospheric autumnal day. Unusually Elterwater was quite still, reflecting the majesty of the surrounding hills. Both Skelwith Force and Colwith Force were demonstrating how powerful forces of nature can be due to some heavy rain a few days before.

The walk follows, for part, the Cumbria Way passing some large slate quarries mostly abandoned leaving huge piles of spoil. These spoil heaps have weathered into the landscape and some have silver birch and larch trees growing upon them.

In Atkinson Coppice the Cathedral Quarry is to be found, now managed by The National Trust. An exciting series of tunnels and man-made caverns can be explored. The main chamber is known as ‘The Cathedral’ and is quite breathtaking with a great echo for added effect. A torch is useful but not essential for visiting the main chamber. Nearby is ‘Slaters Bridge’ an ancient picturesque pack horse bridge dating from the 16th century. The bridge crosses the River Brathay flowing from Little Langdale Tarn to Elterwater.

From Little Langdale a brief climb over Howe Banks and back down to Elterwater.
