Redcar
The Industrial Landscape
With the sad demise of Sahaviriya Steel Industries UK (SSI) in Redcar, Cleveland I have looked at the amazing industrial landscape that envelops this area. Atmospheric light and moody skies add to a sense of melancholy. The closure of the coke ovens and blast furnace means the end of steel production at the 98-year-old Redcar works.
Sad news indeed for an area proud of its industrial heritage and skilled workforce that has been at the forefront of steel making for 170 years. If the global demand for steel picks up then it may be possible to reopen the works in the future but at a massive cost.
